Re:Nylon

Prada has always utilized nylon as its primary material. The brand's debut in 1984 of Pocone in its line of bags and accessories received worldwide praise. Miuccia Prada expanded the collection to include nylon dresses for her own label and Linea Rossa, the nylon-heavy collection that buzzbeast-ready Frank Ocean recently dressed himself in at the Met Gala. The Milan-based powerhouse has redesigned its iconic nylon bags into eco-friendly recycled nylon fabrics. The new collection includes six classic styles including bags for belts, a shoulder bag, tote bag, duffle bag, and two backpacks -- in recycled ECONYL fabric that is made from recycled plastics, fishing nets and textile fiber wastes sourced all over the world.

The material that is repurposed is a result of a collaboration with Aquafil, an Italian textile yarn producer that makes Econyl fabric out of regenerated nylon waste, which can be reused over and over again without losing its quality. The Business of Fashion reports that the repurposed material is part of a larger effort to shift Prada's entire collection from virgin nylon to Re:Nylon by 2021. The collection includes six new Re:Nylon handbags, a pair ECONYL shoes and boots and a selection of clothing made of the same material.

Prada and National Geographic produced a series "What We Carry", the video series that showcases the unique process used to create the Re:Nylon bags. The first video is a collaboration between Harry Potter actress and environmentalist Bonnie Wright and National Geographic Explorer Asher Jay touring an Arizona carpet recycling facility that transforms old nylon into recycled ECONYL.

With the transition to re:Nylon Prada is making the biggest reduction in virgin nylon use yet, resulting in the saving of 70 000 barrels of oil every year, The Business of Fashion reports. Furthermore,  prada bags sale  will cut down on the company's carbon emissions by an estimated 57,000 tons. The label recently went fur-free on its clothes and accessories. This is the most recent sustainable initiative.

Recycled nylon

While it may be better for the environment than nylon, recycled nylon has its own drawbacks. It's not biodegradable. It will sit for decades in landfills or the oceans until it breaks down into smaller pieces that could cause harm to wildlife. The fabric is also not breathable and is able to shed microplastics once washed. It also consumes 50 percent less energy to produce when compared to regular virgin nylon and is more durable than other bags like cotton or wool.

The fabric is made of a mixture of waste plastics and petroleum, which comes from fossil fuels. This means that it doesn't require for more natural resources as well as the carbon emissions resulting from the production of virgin nylon. It is also more manageable than other bag materials, as it doesn't need to be dyed or weaved. This makes it an excellent option for bags that are used often, such as yoga or gym gear.

Recycled nylon is more durable and flexible than polyester or cotton, which are both traditional fabrics. It is also able to take a great deal of abuse which makes it ideal for backpacks and outdoor gear. It is light and easily shaped and stitched to the desired shape of the backpack. Nylon is also a good choice for outdoor gear as it is waterproof and doesn't absorb odors or mildew as easily as other fabrics.

When choosing a bag that is sustainable, look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certification. This certification tests for chemical residues, aswell as environmental and social responsibility. Be sure to look for brands that have this certification because they are likely to be more transparent and responsible when it comes to their products.

Patagonia provides, for instance backpacks, ranges of backpacks and yoga equipment made of recycled nylon, referred to as Econyl. The nylon is produced using a closed-loop method that uses 50% less energy than regular virgin nylon. Additionally, the brand supports organizations that are working to protect the environment.
